Tony West took
this picture of a phenomena known as Parhelia, or 'Sundogs' which can form
on a horizontal line either side of the 22 degree halo around the Sun, and
are caused by refraction through hexagonal plate ice crystals. Sometimes the
halo can be seen and sometimes it is not present. The same effect can occur
around the Moon, when the phenomena is then called 'Parselena' or mock Moons.
Tony took these
pictures of the sun showing solar prominences through the society's new Coronado
solar telescope. (PST)
