What's
New in the Society
The
society has purchased a Coronado PST (personal
solar telescope) which is available for members to use at solar viewing sessions
and any other events of interest.
Members
also interested in astrophotography will hopefully be able to take some solar
images through this telescope, and Andy Hatfield and Tony West have already
tried out the telescope for this purpose - see the members areas for pictures.
Andy's pictures were taken with a canon 30D but it was impossible to achieve
prime focus and so he had to resort to eyepiece projection which was still
difficult and requires further practice.
Tony
West did very well using just his Nikon compact digital camera held to the
eyepiece and got some good shots of the solar prominences which were easily
visible in the telescope - there were only a couple of fading sunspots visible
on Monday 11th June when the pictures were taken.
Andy
Hatfield has added a webcam to the site which shows the current sky conditions
over Bradford - the webcam is a standard 1.3 megapixel camera and does not
have exceptional low light capability so we won't be able to show much of
the night sky just yet, although the camera seems to be working quite well
even in late twilight - Andy hopes to add a more sensitive camera at a later
date which will allow us to see better as the light fades.
